Online payment is a sensitive spot: a single mistake can hurt your customer and your reputation. The good news is that the best security is not touching card data at all.
Leave cards to the payment gateway
Use a reputable payment gateway that shows the card form on its own page or inside its frame. Card details go straight to the gateway, and you only get back a token or the result. That sharply reduces your responsibility and compliance burden.
What you still do
- HTTPS on every page, not only the payment page.
- Verify payments server-side: do not trust the success page the browser shows; trust the gateway’s webhook after verifying its signature.
- Tie the order to the amount: compute the amount on the server and never accept it from the browser.
- Prevent duplicates: use a unique operation ID so a retry does not charge twice.
Secrets
Keep gateway keys in a config file outside the web root or in environment variables, never in code pushed to Git.
Be transparent with customers
Show the final price and fees before payment, send a clear receipt, and provide an understandable refund policy.
Payment security is trust, and trust is built from small details.
