"We want a mobile app" is a sentence I hear often, and after discussion it usually turns out the client wants something simpler and cheaper than a store app. The main choice today is between a progressive web app (PWA) and a native app.

What is a progressive web app?

It is a website equipped with three things: a Manifest file describing its name and icon, a Service Worker enabling offline use and temporary data storage, and HTTPS. Users can "install" it on their home screen and it opens full-screen like an app.

Advantages of a PWA

  • One codebase for Android, iPhone and desktop, so cost and maintenance are lower.
  • No store, no review: users arrive via a link, and updates reach everyone instantly.
  • Faster to launch and easier to test and adjust.
  • Notifications are available on the major platforms, including iPhone for installed apps.

When native is better

  • You need deep device access: advanced Bluetooth, sensors, long background work, or deep OS integration.
  • You want high graphics performance such as games or video editing.
  • Store presence matters as a discovery channel, or it is a contractual requirement.
  • Your work depends on platform-specific features that need a native interface.

Questions that settle it

  1. What is the core function? Bookings, orders, client portals and dashboards are usually well served by a PWA.
  2. What are the budget and timeline? A PWA starts cheaper and faster, and you can build on it later.
  3. Who is the audience? If they reach you via a link, an ad or WhatsApp, the web fits better.
  4. Do I need offline access? A PWA supports it to a good degree.

My advice

Start with a good responsive website, add PWA capabilities if needed, and measure user engagement. If a real need for device features or the store appears, build a native app knowing why, from numbers rather than guesses.

The best app is the one that solves the client's problem at the lowest cost and highest ease, not the one with the most features.

I build all three (responsive sites, progressive apps and mobile apps), and I am glad to advise on what suits your project before you spend the budget.
